March 21, 2013 marks the 8th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day, a global awareness day which has been officially observed by the United Nations since 2012. Down syndrome is a naturally occurring chromosomal arrangement that has always been a part of the human condition, exists in all regions across the world and commonly results in variable effects on learning styles, physical characteristics or health. The estimated occurrence of Down syndrome is between 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 1,100 live births worldwide. Each year approximately 3,000 to 5,000 children are born with this chromosome disorder.

While the Centers for Disease Control autism incidence rate is still at 1 in 88, the Indiana Resource Center for Autism has just published a report based on the child count data from this school year and states that the incidence in Indiana is 1 in 77. This data does not reflect children who are homeschooled or educated in non-public schools, which means that the incidence number could be even greater.

March is Indiana Disability Awareness Month. The Governors Council for People with Disabilities has a campaign that Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation (CCPR) is a part of each year to bring more light and awareness to disabilities and the programs they have to offer.

March 6 is the national observance date for the "Spread the Word to End the Word" campaign, which encourages people to pledge to stop using the word "retard(ed)", or the "R-word." An ongoing effort by Special Olympics and Best Buddies, "Spread the Word to End the Word" has become an international effort.

The XI Paralympics Winter Games will be taking place on March 7 through March 16, 2014 in Sochi, Russia for the first time ever. The games that will be taken place in Sochi are the Biathlon, Alpine skiing, Cross-country skiing, Wheelchair curling, Sledge hockey, and for the first time, Snowboarding.
